Chapter Ten

Georgiana flung open the double doors to the large salon in the north wing. She stepped inside the room, delighted with the progress. Gone was the dusty old furniture and stained wallpaper. The floor, freshly scrubbed, smelled of lemon oil. Clean windows left open mere inches allowed an autumn-scented breeze to filter in and mingle with the citrusy fragrance of the polished flooring.

She’d not need these quarters until Lucas took up permanent residence. Most likely he’d settle down here after he’d had his fill of life as a bachelor and took a wife. Then again, he might very well prefer the countryside to London since he’d reveled in the outdoors during his boyhood.

Whatever the outcome, the entire estate would soon be his to do with as he pleased. She could only hope he’d acquiesce to the idea of her exclusive use of the north wing. Considering the sheer size of the estate, building a separate dower house seemed superfluous. The very thought of Lucas being the sole possessor of Summerfield Hall sent heartening solace running through her.

What she wanted at the moment, however, was a bit of time to herself before his arrival. She took note of what had been brought into the room from another part of the house. An overstuffed chair upholstered in mossy-green velvet sat beside a blazing fire. A French parquetry table set for tea was positioned next to the chair. Her favorite porcelain teapot cloaked in a knitted tea cozy to keep the liquid warm perched atop the stand. A bone-china cup and a small pitcher of milk sat next to it. A plate of scones, a pot of jam, and a serviette folded inside a wide silver ring completed the picture. She smiled. Lily and Cook’s doing, this.

Taking a seat in the overstuffed chair, she winced. Every muscle in her body served as a reminder of the previous night. Her loins literally ached—a pleasurable niggling to be sure. At the memory of her interlude with Rob, a delightful shiver of wanting billowed through her. The taste and scent of him, still very much alive in her memory, worked to sweep her back in time. The recollection of how he’d whispered her name over and over as he’d moved inside her, his voice rough and smooth at the same time, sent an erotic shudder running through her. The intense pleasure he’d given her slammed into her heart anew. He’d told her to take what she wanted of him because it would be the only time, but he seemed to have been absorbed in taking what he wanted as well. Her cheeks heated at the memory.

Good Lord, Lucas was due to arrive today and here she’d spent last night in his father’s arms. What a peculiar turn of events. The last occasion she’d had to sleep with Rob was when she’d intended to share the news that she carried his child. Now the child was a young man. Soon, Lucas and Rob would learn the truth.
